On this 2-day kayaking trip with guide in Søhøjlandet, you are guaranteed a unique experience. You will see the beautiful sceneri from the water in a kayak, we will cook a tasteful gourmet dinner together on the bonfire and enjoy a night under the stars. There is a great chance that we will see kingfisher, white-tailed eagle, osprey and if we are very lucky an otter

Day 1: Skanderborg – Klostermølle

Meetingpoint: The parkinglot by Danhostel Skanderborg.

This 2 day kayaking trip begins with a thorough instruction in paddel technique before we head out on the water. We will paddle nice and easy through the beautiful sceneri surrounding the lakes of Skanderborg, downstream on the pretty Tåning Å leading to the lake Mossø. We will paddle along the southern shore of the lake until we reach Klostermølle where our first stage ends.

Klostermøller is a unique spot at the foot of Sukkertoppen. In the middle ages there used to be a convict here and later a factory producing cardboard.

The big drying barn that still remains at Klostermølle  is the longest wooden building in Northern Europe.

Accommodation:

We set up camp at Klostermølle before we start cooking at the bonfire. We will be sleeping in tents or bivouac.

Day 2: Klostermølle – Ry

After breakfast we get in our kayaks and leave Klostermølle. We kayak downstream on Gudenåen all the way to Ry. During the day we will pass Emborg bro, Gudensø and Ry Møllesø. Nature is particularly beautiful at the first stage of this day, and we will have a fair chance of spotting kingfisher, grey heron and other birds along with vast vegetation including the most poisonous plant in Denmark poison ivy.

Practical information:

The daytrips will vary from 10 to 16 km per day.

The expense covers all equipment, meals and lodging.

We reserve the right to change the route.

Who can participate in this 2-day kayaking trip with guide:

There are no particular skills required. Minimum age is 12.

Alternate accommodation:

It is possible at an extra cost to spend the night at B&B Toften in Sønder Vissing. Transportation by car will be arranged.

If you go on a kingfisher safari on Gudenåen and Salten Å between Klostermølle and Ry, you have a good chance of seeing the kingfisher in its element. It’s a glorious sight, when it whizzes past you just above the surface of the water and lets out its shrill cry. It’s a sight you’ll never forget when you see its beautiful blue and orange plumage light up in the evening sun.

In addition to kingfishers, you have the opportunity to see lots of other species of birds, animals and plants on the trip. You will get close to herons, grebes, cormorants, swans and many other animals. If you’re very lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a sea eagle or an otter. You will also pass many exciting plants, including Denmark’s most poisonous plant, the Poisonous Plant.

How do you get close to the kingfisher?

The kingfisher is best seen from the water. It often flies low along the bank and is therefore very difficult to see from land. When you glide almost silently through the water in the canoe, it provides optimal conditions for getting close to the animals that live on and by the water. The kingfisher is, however, a very shy bird and you have to be alert and quick to see it.

Why should you join a kingfisher safari on Gudenåen?

The kingfisher is probably Denmark’s most beautiful bird. With its strong colors it stands out from most other birds. There are only about 300 – 400 breeding pairs in Denmark. However, many kingfishers live by the Gudenåen and its tributaries and there is a good chance of seeing them in the area between Mossø and Gudensø. It is difficult to see when traveling on land, so you will have the best chance of seeing them from the water.

How does the trip take place?

The trip takes place in a canoe from Emborg Bro at Gl. Rye. The trip is suitable for the whole family. You don’t need to know how to sail a canoe.
Before the trip, you will receive thorough instruction in paddling technique from our trained canoe guide.

We leave in small groups of no more than 6 canoes. In each canoe there can be 2 adults and 1 to 2 children. The whole trip lasts about 3 to 4 hours.

We do everything to ensure that you have a safe and good experience.

On a guided canoe trip to Himmelbjerget, an experienced instructor will instruct you in the most important paddling and make sure you get the most out of the trip. By having learned a little basic paddling technique, you get better control of your canoe and thus a better experience out of the canoe trip. You don’t have to take care of all the practicalities of the trip, as everything has been prepared for you. You just have to sit down in the canoe and enjoy rowing through the beautiful landscape around Himmelbjerget.

It gives you peace of mind on the trip when there is a skilled guide with you who is in charge of both safety and all the practicalities associated with the trip.

Which nature experiences for you?

There is plenty of beautiful nature to see on the stretch between Ry and Himmelbjerget. There is a rich bird life on and along the water. There are lots of waterfowl in the area. You are sure to see herons, mallards and Grebes. With a bit of luck, we may even see the beautiful kingfisher flying by or a sea eagle soaring high in the sky above us. Along the way, you will also get some interesting information and funny anecdotes about the places we pass.

What do you need to know about the trip?

The tour starts at the Skimminghøj tent site in Ry and you come through Birksø and past Allinge out to Julsøen, where Himmelbjerget rises to its full height of 147 m. At Himmelbjerget we take a longer break. There will be time to climb the “mountain”. It is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the water up to the top with the tower. From here there is a fantastic view of the Søhøjlandet on all sides. It is here at the foot of Himmelbjerget that you will be served a light “wilderness lunch”. During the trip, there will be shorter breaks where you will have the opportunity to stretch your legs and have a cup of coffee to strengthen yourself.

The whole trip on the water is about 14 km and lasts about 7 to 8 hours.

At this 2 day canoe trip in Søhøjlandet you will get a unique experience. You will encounter the beautiful Søhøjland from the water in a canoe, you will participate in making a delicious gourmet campfire dinner and you will enjoy a night under the stars in the midst of nature.

The trip will start off with a thorough introduction to paddle techniques. We then set off and paddle nice and easy through the beautiful scenery towards our camping site. Once we are there, we make camp and enjoy the cooking and campfire together.

The second day we paddle back to our starting point.

The trip will be approximately 8 to 12 km. pr. day.
